2005 Northeast Onsite Wastewater Treatment Short Course and Equipment Exhibition

Archive for the Northeast Onsite Wastewater Treatment Short Course and Equipment Exhibition, held in March of 2005.

Archived Field Trip information for the 2005 Onsite Shortcourse
Tour #1 – University of Rhode Island
Attendees will visit the URI Cooperative Extension Onsite Wastewater Training Center and selected alternative wastewater technology systems in the Green Hill Pond watershed of coastal Rhode Island.

This Center is a demonstration and field-training center for alternative septic system technologies in the Northeast- one of eight regional centers nationally. It is operated in partnership with over 40 private sector contractors, RIDEM, RICRMC, EPA and others. The Center has twenty-two full scale systems constructed above ground for hands-on learning and over 50 demonstration and research systems installed in seven communities.

Upon visiting alternative and innovative technology sites, field trip hosts will discuss alternative and innovative systems permitted in Rhode Island; the selection of the proper system for site and resource protection; regulatory and permitting issues; blending a system into the home landscape; installation practices and precautions; system performance, risk, and resource protection considerations; operation, maintenance, electrical energy, and inspection needs; and system sampling and monitoring performance.

Tour # 2 – Connecticut Subsurface System Inspections – Tools of the Trade
Gary Yuknat of Shoreline Sanitation will demonstrate inspection equipment and procedures for a conventional residential system in Old Lyme, CT and a commercial system in Old Saybrook, CT. The commercial system has a Soil/Air leaching enhancement system in place. Gary will demonstrate the use of a portable drill rig for soil sampling, a pipe camera/monitor system, and a small excavator for exposing various portions of the system. At the commercial operation, inspection of grease traps and pump chambers will be discussed, and there will be a demonstration of a web-based tank monitoring system and the Soil/Air system. Inspection forms from several states will be discussed and evaluated by participants.

Tour #3 – Connecticut Commercial Systems Tour
Connecticut communities are utilizing on-site wastewater renovation systems as a permanent wastewater management alternative. In order to maintain a rural character in a sensitive environment some on-site systems have utilized advanced treatment technology and simple recirculating sand filters to address site limitations. Visit residential and commercial establishments that provide for nitrogen removal prior to discharging to the on-site soils. Performance data and plans and specifications for these facilities will be reviewed by DEP. The design engineers and licensed operators will be available to address your questions.
