    Environmental Analysts - Wetlands, Rhode Island

    The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission seeks three full-time wetlands scientists to manage a variety of projects related to vernal pools, mitigation, compliance and outreach. These positions will be located at the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management in Providence, Rhode Island.

    The successful candidates will have knowledge of and demonstrated experience with aspects of wetlands science and watershed management. Strong communications skills a must. Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, natural science, earth science, biology, public policy, chemistry or related field required.

    Summer Intern - Wetlands, Rhode Island

    The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission seeks a full-time summer intern to assist in evaluating environmental outcome in the wetlands program in the field following the construction of various development projects. This position will located at the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management in Providence, Rhode Island and will begin in May, 2007.

    The successful candidate will have knowledge of wetlands science, the ability to work independently and a minimum of 2-3 years towards a Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences or related field. Ideal applicants will be well organized, have the ability to read and interpret site plans and maps and orient in the field. Familiarity with wetlands BMPs preferred.

    Environmental Engineers

    The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) announces that it is interviewing for one entry level and one mid-level Environmental Engineer. We are seeking bright, energetic, environmentally astute people that must have excellent communication skills to monitor the progress and review and comment on the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s efforts to implement capital projects required by the 2005 Administrative Consent Order (ACO) between the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the City of New York. Terms of the ACO, NEIWPCC’s role as the Independent Environmental Monitor (IEM) under the ACO, and a listing of the projects and compliance schedules may be viewed at: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/ogc/dee/nycdep_cso_order.html

    Projects include large regional combined sewer overflow storage and abatement facilities, sewer separation, and sewage treatment plant and collection system upgrades throughout New York City. Duties will include reviewing engineering plans and specifications, on-site compliance oversight and inspections, permit compliance and Combined Sewer Overflow Long Term Control Plan development for the 14 New York City drainage basins. Frequent travel will be required to attend meetings and conduct site inspections.

    The successful candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental/Civil Engineering or related field. The mid-level engineering position requires a New York State Professional Engineers license and a minimum of four years related experience. Construction oversight/inspection experience preferred. The entry level position is for a recent college graduate. The mid-level engineering position may be located in either the NYSDEC headquarters in Albany, NY or at the NYSDEC’s Region 2 office in Queens, NY based upon the candidate’s preference. The entry level position will be located at the NYSDEC headquarters in Albany, NY. NEIWPCC salary and benefits are commensurate with New York State employment.     Large River Nutrient Criteria Project Intern

    The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC), seeks an intern to assist staff biologists in benthic macroinvertebrate sample collection, processing, identification, and data entry in support of nutrient criteria development. This project is being conducted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to develop numeric nutrient criteria for non-wadeable rivers and streams in New York State.

    This position will be located at the New York State DEC Stream Biomonitoring Unit, 425 Jordan Road, Troy, NY 12180 and will last 12 weeks from late May 2007 to early August 2007; this position does not include benefits.

    The successful candidate will be currently enrolled in or already completed a Bachelors Degree, or higher degree in the field of ecology, biology, ecology, entomology, or environmental science. Specific interest or training in aquatic biology, aquatic entomology, freshwater resources, and/or biological monitoring is a plus. Previous fieldwork experience is also a plus. Ideal applicants will be well-organized and highly motivated.

    Lakes and Ponds Internship

    The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission seeks several interns to assist with a regional lakes and ponds assessment. Interns will assist with the collection and processing of water and sediment samples, as well as assist with database management and mapping for the project. These positions will be located at the New England U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Laboratory in Chelmsford, MA . Primary duties will include monitoring activities to assess lake ecosystem health, project database management and GIS work.

    The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years towards a Bachelor's degree in the environmental sciences or related field; enrollment in a Master's program is preferred. Course work in environmental studies, biology, chemistry, limnology and GIS a plus. Ideal candidates will be well organized and have experience in relational databases, Microsoft Office and global positioning systems. Experience in laboratory work a plus as well.

    These positions are temporary positions and will not extend past September, 2007.

    Water Quality Modeling Research Assistant

    The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) seeks a Research Assistant to work part-time to model, using the Northeast AVGWLF, the implications of implementing various best management practice (BMP) scenarios in the Connecticut River watershed have on nutrient and sediment loading to the watershed. The Research Assistant will also assist the project manager in other Connecticut River and Northeast AVGWLF activities.

    The Water Modeling Research Assistant will assist NEIWPCC staff with the development of a Quality Assurance Project Plan for this project. S/he will work with staff from NEIWPCC, the Long Island Sound Study, and a Connecticut River workgroup to develop BMP scenarios and run the model. In addition, s/he will update the BMP database in the model, develop power point presentations and present work at project meetings, review and/or proof-read technical reports and assist with project meetings.

    The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years towards a Bachelors Degree in the Environmental Sciences or related field; enrollment in a Master’s program is preferred; extensive knowledge of Arc View 3.x and water quality modeling; course work in watershed management, environmental policy, or water resources a plus.

    Outreach Intern

    NEIWPCC is seeking an intern to assist the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services with its efforts to determine which food establishments meet the definition of a transient water system, and, if so, contact them and provide them with the information needed to comply with state regulations. The incumbent will review the entire list of food establishments and detemine if each does or does not meet the definition of a transient water system, will contact and provide educational and compliance information to at least 75 systems. This effort will help achieve environmental compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and improve the national target for providing clean and safe drinking water.

    Lead and Copper Intern

    NEIWPCC is seeking an intern to assist the Maine Drinking Water Program in its efforts to educate schools on lead and copper in drinking water and the associated health impacts. The intern will identify which schools are in most need of education, contact water suppliers and collect all existing sampling data on record for schools, and compile a list of all schools where water is sampled as part of the water system's sampling plan. This is a paid temporary position for an undergraduate or graduate student.
