    Nutrient Criteria Reports

The Relationships Between Nutrient Concentrations and Periphyton Levels in Rivers and Streams - A Review of Scientific Literature is the result of a review conducted by ENSR, NEIWPCC, and EPA. The results of this literature review are intended to support development of ecoregional nutrient criteria for rivers and streams in New England.

The appendix is also available in two separate PDF files for easier downloading:

  • Part I.
  • Part II.

As part of the strategy described in former Vice President Gore’s Clean Water Action Plan, NEIWPCC, in conjunction with EPA, established waterbody-specific assessment teams in order to coordinate the development of regional nutrient criteria. NEIWPCC began this effort with a briefing to the states on the National Strategy. NEIWPCC then selected ENSR as the contractor for the collection and evaluation of nutrient data. NEIWPCC regularly coordinates meetings of waterbody specific (lakes, river, estuaries) Regional Technical Assistance Groups to keep the states informed of the continuing work performed by ENSR, the development of technical guidance documents produced by EPA, and to establish a regional strategy to assist the states in developing numeric nutrient criteria.

The report on the Collection & Evaluation of Ambient Nutrient Data for Lakes, Ponds, and Reservoirs in New England is available for your review. (The addendums to this report are: Appendix A, Appendix B, Appendix C, and Appendix D.) The report on the Collection & Evaluation of Ambient Nutrient Data for Rivers and Streams in New England is also available. (The addendums to this report are: Appendix A/B, Appendix C, and Database Overview.) These data synthesis reports were created by ENSR and are a compilation of the monitoring data from the New England states over the 1990s. The reports analyze surface water nutrient levels state to state to better prepare the region for the release of EPA's final nutrient criteria.

The report on Evaluation of Potential Linkages between 305(b) Water Use Impairments and Nutrient Levels in New England Lakes, Ponds and Reservoirs is available for your review (downloadedable in three parts below). This 305(b) Linkage report was created by ENSR International and is an effort to ground-truth the statistical indicators of water quality to the 305(b) assessment of whether waterbodies support designated uses, and thus determine nutrient levels that are supportive of the various water uses.
