Partnerships | Long Island Sound Study Bioextraction Workshop

NEIWPCC has partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Long Island Sound Study to co-sponsor a workshop on bioextractive technologies for nutrient remediation. Bioextraction is the practice of using living organisms, including shellfish and seaweeds, to filter nutrients from a body of water. The organisms absorb nutrients from the water as part of their normal life cycles. Humans can then harvest these organisms to remove nutrients from the system. This exploration of bioextractive technologies is part of a much broader effort to reduce nutrients and hypoxia problems in the Sound.

The Bioextraction Workshop will take place December 3-4, 2009 on the University of Connecticut’s Stamford Campus.

*UPDATE*: There is still space available at the Bioextraction Workshop.  Registration for this event remains open.  Please register by November 25th, 2009 to take advantage of early-bird pricing.
