Safe Drinking Water and Your Campground
Providing safe drinking water is not only an essential part of offering an enjoyable experience for campers, but a requirement of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Under the SDWA, campgrounds that serve water to an average of 25 people for at least 60 days of the year are classified as public water systems, which means they are responsible for maintaining a safe water supply. That's not always a simple matter, and many campground owners may not be aware of the steps required to comply with state and federal regulations.
NEIWPCC developed a 4-page fact sheet that provides basic operational tips and regulatory information for campground owners. Two versions were prepared, tailored to the needs of owners in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but in many respects, the information applies to owners in other states. However, we advise consulting your state for specific requirements.
